Bodo is the most important gateway to the Lofoten islands with the facilities of daily ferry, coastal vessel (Hurtigruten) and airplane connection to this group of islands. This city was established in 1816, with only 200 inhabitants for its first 20-30 years. After the arrival of herring off the coast in 1860, made the town to grow rapidly and extensive industry developed. Bodo was founded by Trondheim merchants. A commercial-fishing centre specializing in cod drying, it also has ship repair yards and a brewery. In World War II much of the town was destroyed by German air and ground action, but it has been completely rebuilt and enlarged. Reconstruction included a large airport and the extension of the North Norway Railway to Bodo from Lonsdal to the south.
