Bodo is the most important gateway to the Lofoten islands with the facilities of daily ferry, coastal vessel (Hurtigruten) and airplane connection to this group of islands. This city was established in 1816, with only 200 inhabitants for its first 20-30 years. A commercial-fishing centre specializing in cod drying, it also has ship repair yards and a brewery.
